Tips for Exploring Tantra When Your Partner Isn’t Interested
Ecstatic Living® Institute

It’s no secret that practicing Tantra can help you unlock a deeper, more spiritual connection with your partner. If you are just starting to read up on the topic, you’re probably pretty excited about the prospect of learning Tantra with your partner to enhance your relationship inside and outside of the bedroom. But what happens when the conversation doesn’t go as planned when you talk to them about it? While we know that tantric love can improve your relationship in many different ways, we also recognize that not everyone is open to exploring this sacred art of pleasure and sexual ecstasy.

Ecstatic Living® Institute is here to help you discover how you can integrate tantric love into your life in order to have a relationship with your partner that is full of love, reverence, and spirituality. We previously provided you with some tips for talking to your partner about Tantra. Today, we’ll offer some tips for exploring Tantra when your partner isn’t interested.

Wait — Don’t You Need a Partner to Practice Tantra?

It is a common misconception that Tantra is a practice that is strictly reserved for couples. In truth, Tantra can be practiced as an individual or a couple — there are no rules when it comes to exploring and cultivating your sexual energy and anyone has the ability to discover the blissful benefits of Tantra, regardless of whether they are single or in a relationship.

As renowned Tantra teacher Margot Anand once wisely said, “Don’t count on sex to be the door to intimacy. It’s the other way around: first, develop intimacy skills, then make love to enjoy them.” In other words, discovering intimacy can be thought of as a necessary precursor to enjoying a deeply spiritual and sexual relationship with another individual.

What Can You Do?

So, what can you do if you are ready to make the leap and begin your tantric journey but your partner is not on board? Below are a few tips that can help you navigate the new landscape of your relationship successfully while remaining true to yourself and your needs.

Be Honest and Authentic

When you talk with your partner about your desire to practice Tantra, you want to do so from a place of unashamed honesty and authenticity. Begin by telling your partner what you love about your relationship and how you have become interested in learning more about Tantra. Try to avoid pointing out areas of your relationship that clearly need work, as this could leave your partner feeling inadequate or defensive. Are there ways you feel it could benefit you and your partner as individuals and your relationship as a whole if you practice it together? If so, share this information with your partner. Being completely open, honest, and authentic in your conversations will provide a safe space for your partner to do the same.

Own Your Sexuality and Prioritize It

Tantra is more than sex — it is about understanding your own sexuality and how it relates to every aspect of your life, from your health and wellness to your finances, career, and beyond. Sadly, many individuals feel confusion and shame about their sexual desires, which can lead to a lot of repression. Just as you are an individual who matters in your relationship, so too is your sexuality. Owning it and pursuing fulfilling sexual intimacy starts with understanding what you find alluring about the tantric lifestyle and seeking out answers to questions that you have as you set out on your tantric journey. You deserve happiness and sexual intimacy — embrace and own this mantra.

Understand There May Be Tension

In a perfect world, your partner will be as enthusiastic and excited as you are, jumping at the chance to embark upon a tantric journey together. While this is clearly the optimal response you want from your partner, it is important to understand and respect that they may not be on the same page or prepared to commit to exploring tantric love with you. This in and of itself can lead to tension in your relationship. Even if your partner is on board with exploring Tantra together, there is a chance, as there is with any type of personal growth, that you could outpace them, which can also lead to tension. For the best possible outcome, clear and consistent communication between the two of you is critical.

Ready to Learn More About Tantra?

Discovering and learning Tantra can be an exciting, awakening process. It can be difficult when your partner is not willing to accompany you on your tantric journey, but rest assured that the decision to continue on your journey is solely up to you. For some individuals, especially those who come from backgrounds of sexual trauma or repression, Tantra offers a means of healing and finding the confidence to embrace sexual intimacy as it was meant to be enjoyed. Finding a partner who supports you in your tantric journey is ideal, but it may not always be easy.
